“Did You Mourn?”

The subtext of this question alone is intriguing. For Loki there is a definite need for verbal affirmation. He’s human in this moment, as of course we’ve seen many times before. Except this time, if not for a split second, his words leave him vulnerable. Loki’s direct. He needs to know. Was he truly missed? It’s a pointed question, and he asks it very seriously. I don’t doubt this is something he’s mulled over during his time lost from Asgard. He knows Thor, knows well he would grieve. Yet Loki would still wonder, maybe even worry about something like this. Second guess. Convince himself otherwise, because that’s how he is.

One could then assume it would please Loki to hear that Thor has shed tears for him. Mourned as result of loving him. Further, and perhaps subconsciously on Loki’s part, he has also cornered his brother into how he might respond. How would any sibling answer this question?

“We all did.”

This is not a common, singular response. Thor skirts the intimate nature of the question to include others, removing the focus from only himself. While I’m aware that this is a lead in to move the dialogue along, this phrase standing on its own is a little defensive. Aloof. After all, Loki has weakened Thor. Betrayed him. So he cannot crumble. Not right away.

“I have seen the power of the Tesseract. And when I wield it-,”

“Who has showed you this power? Who controls the would-be king?”

This part, I can’t even….Ok. Thor has realized this is not his brother’s plan. As fellow fans have already and so graciously pointed out, Loki never even wanted the throne in Asgard to begin with. He takes up Odin’s staff and is somewhat bewildered by it. So why now, after everything he’s been through, would he desire to rule Earth? It’s like Tony Stark said. Loki craves the spotlight. Attention. At the very core of it all, he wants love. (Tony didn’t say that much but you get where I’m going.) Does Thor see this? 

“You give up the Tesseract. You give up this poisonous dream…You come home.”

“I don’t have it. You need the cube to bring me home but I’ve sent it off I know not where.”

Of course Thor sees it. His frustration here is almost crippling, and it’s as close to begging as we ever see him get. Meanwhile Loki avoids the subject of wanting or not wanting to go home all together. Note he does not deny Asgard as his home but rather, he chooses to call it his home. Or, as is more specifically implied, Loki’s home is inarguably where his brother is. While in his mind he’s cast himself out from his family, I don’t think he really has or even wants to. His words tell us everything here.

Loki never holds Thor down either. If anything, he places his brother on a pedestal with himself in the shadows. Maybe that’s why in the end he asks for that drink. Was his heart really all that in it anyway?

When they’re fighting atop Stark Tower and Loki says it’s too late, do you recall his expression? That ‘what the hell have I done’ look?

The question that remains now is if Thor might love him less. After being dropped from an airship. Stabbed. He’s a little worse for wear this time. But I’d like to think, and hope, that despite Thor’s supposed lack of depth and intelligence, that he gets it. And I feel comfortable enough with such evidence to suggest Loki might love his brother more than anything. Sure he’s tried to shake that ‘sentiment’ many times over. Get rid of Thor. Kill him off. But it’s not that simple. Against the odds they still leave together. 

Despite what he’s done and everything that’s happened, when the dust clears, Loki is ironically, no longer alone.
